Avocado and Reflux

What’s in an Avocado? Avocados have a creamy pale green/yellow fleshy fruit centre with a large seed and tough green skin. They provide nearly 20 essential nutrients, including fibre, potassium, Vitamin E, B-vitamins, and folic acid. The avocado is virtually the only fruit that contains monounsaturated fat – good fat!

What does it do for my baby’s body? Apart from being a good fat, Avocados can act as a “nutrient booster” by helping increase the absorption of fat-soluble nutrients like Vitamins A, D, K and E.

Should I give Avocado when my baby has infant reflux? The avocado’s creamy consistency makes it and ideal fresh food for a baby to manage. The taste of avocado is fairly plain for a baby’s palette so can be used as part of a finger food meal or mashed with another food. Avocado makes a great first food for baby due to its texture and creaminess; an extra bonus is that avocado is full or “good” fats and has a high nutrient content!

Avocado may be offered as early as 4 – 6 months old. Babies need carbohydrates, and fats as well as proteins for their growth during the crucial first year.
